What is Family Constellations?
Family and Business Constellations is a powerful experiential healing modality that uncovers invisible family patterns passed down through generations. So much of the anxiety, repeating struggle, or emotional heavy-lifting we face aren’t event ours, they actually stem from the unresolved trauma or exclusions of our family tree. By bringing realigning these hidden dynamics, it can help in your release inherited emotional burdens, break long-standing cycles, and find your rightful place in your life. Origins and Foundations
Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the 1990s, Family Constellations a multigenerational healing modality that synthesizes elements of systemic family therapy, phenomenology, and Indigenous community wisdom.
While living, working, and studying WITH the Zulu people of South Africa, he observed how deeply interconnected their family systems were and how collective healing relied on honoring every member of the tribe. After being WITH the Zulu people for more than a decade, he returned to Germany where he observed that modern emotional struggles often stem from violations of fundamental relationship principles - what he called The Orders of Love.
The Orders of Love:
The Right to Belong: Every family member has an equal right to be included. Excluded or forgotten members create imbalances that future generations unconsciously try to fix.
Order & Hierarchy: Those who cambe before have priority over those who come after (e.g., parents give, children receive).
Balance of Giving and Taking: Healthy relationships require an equitable exchange of energy and support.
Bert Hellinger further combined the work of the Zulu tribe WITH many different western therapies including Gestalt Therapy and Karl Jung’s work on archetypes.
How does Family Constellations work?
A Family Constellation session reveals unseen dynamics by taking what is internal thinking and making it visible in real-time. Whether conducted in a group session or in an individual session, the process follows a simple yet profound flow:
Defining the Issue: You focus on a core personal challenge to work on rather than retelling your entire life story. This could be a recurring relationship failure, deep-seated guilt, any difficulty that you are currently facing. This is referred to as “the Seeker.”
Setting the Field: In a group, participants are chosen to represent members of your family, or in some cases abstract elements such as “fear”, “abundance”, “culture”, or “ancestor”, etc. In individual sessions, floor anchors or objects are used. These are referred to a “Representatives” or “Reps.”
Uncovering the Dynamics: Without script or rehearsal, representatives respond to the intuitive energy of the “knowing field.” Their positioning, physical movements, and sensations highlight where the system is blocked or entangled.
Restoring the Orders of Love: Through gentle movements, symbolic gestures, and specific healing sentences, the Facilitator (that’s me and soon-to-be-you!) helps re-align the system. Previously excluded members are acknowledged, burdens are returned to their original owners, and a family of origin is restored.
The Result: You step away from the session with a profound internal shift by moving out of the unconscious loyalty to past trauma and into your own strength and present life.
